Mobile-Assisted Language Learning at the Workplace

The project seeks to build solid partnerships between the regional network of corporations and Region South Denmark in relation to the continuing education offered by the region. Specifically, the project aims to develop innovative and growth-enhancing training for staff of small and medium enterprises (SME).

Based on analysis of a range of SME-specific needs for training Danish as a second language and English, the project will develop flexible courses using mobile platforms and the theory of job-related practical learning, second language acquisition (SLA), and location-based learning and training.
The training courses will use innovative models, to ensure that companies located in the region are able to offer their employees training that addresses their need for practical work-related skills development and lifelong learning in a globalised and knowledge-based labour market.

The mobile platform (a mobile phone or a PDA, personal digital assistant) functions as the nerve centre for learning: it can be used for storage, communication, exercises, and evaluation. The mobile platform will also be used to register new and identified training needs. The project’s content will focus on workplace Danish and English. The learnings from this module can be used for other types of learning content.

Today, mobile phones facilitate a much-improved access to the Internet. Likewise, the Internet has improved from the so-called Web 1.0 to Web 2.0, where social software, new platforms and a variety of new tools place the user in the centre of activities, which have great potential in educational settings. These technological renewals will be included in the project.
