Det Mobile Sproglaboratorium
(The Mobile Language Laboratory)
The Mobile Language Laboratory is the only one of its kind in Scandinavia. It is a language laboratory where adult bilinguals – regardless of time and place – are able to use the connection between the mobile telephone and the internet for language learning. The Laboratory aims to offer them new opportunities to use Danish in ordinary daily conversations and at the workplace. Daily life conversations could be at their children’s schools or day care centres, at association meetings, with neighbours, as well as at the workplace – at the cafeteria, with the employer, with customers, etc.
The Mobile Language Laboratory offers a combination of mobile phone and the Internet. The mobile phone functions as registration and training tool where it could be relevant in the adult’s daily life. The conversations can be uploaded to a learning room on the Internet.
Aside from making it possible to save the language that was spoken, the mobile phone also makes it possible to personalise the learning period. Aside from being able to study Danish in the individuals own daily and workplace situation, the mobile phone makes it possible for the learner to share his/her recordings, observations and thoughts with others –in the same way that the learner can also use and learn from others’ recordings, observations and thoughts.
The project’s primary target group are adult learners at the language schools who are under the “Danish Education 2 Programme”. These students experience a strong need to satisfactorily function in Danish daily and workplace conversations.
Moreover, the project addresses bilinguals in other learning institutions (e.g., Adult Education Centres, Social and Health Schools, Technical Colleges, etc.), as well as those at the workplace, that require a special effort in relation to daily and work-related conversations.
The project was implemented from 15th August 2006 to 30th March 2007, and was financed by the Ministry of Integration. The materials that were developed in the project can be accessed at the e-learning universe, www.dansk.nu.
