Forum Theatre

High drop-out rates in secondary and vocational education are among the biggest challenges facing European contries today. Among the factors that prevent pupils from finishing their education are: lack of challenge, attention, self image or due to ethnic heritage. Many, especially in developed countries, do not see the point of completing any education since it is easy to find work.

The project aims to improve the competences of teachers and guidance counsellors by providing them with an innovative pedagogical tool – the Forum Theatre technique and use of the mobile technology -- to motivate high risk-students (migrants and socially at risk groups) students to complete an education. Forum theatre or the “theatre of the Oppressed” was developed by the Brazilian theatre practitioner, Augusto Boal and is a participative theatre technique that has been used in over 180 countries worldwide to promote social empowerment, and adopted to address social issues such as racism, political discrimination of minority groups, loneliness and personal alienation.

The project will develop training modules for public school teachers and guidance counsellors, produce a guidebook on forum theatre, develop and use mobile platforms to encourage young people to actively participate in the activities. Courses will be held in the partner countries, UK and Finland.

The project is funded by the EU- Lifelong Learning Programme – Leonardo Da Vinci Transfer of Innovation programme, and runs from 2010 to 2012.
